Well the “Florida Swing” continues as the TOUR heads to Innisbrook to play the Copperhead course this week.
First let me say, wow! I’m still out of breath from that finish in Mexico last week. It was awesome to see Phil come out on top for the first time in 5 years (also helping me get my first pick of the year). If you missed it, Justin Thomas eagled out on 18 to take a 2 shot lead in the clubhouse. Phil had to birdie his last 2 holes to force a playoff. The rest is history!
First of all Phil has been playing great all year long with 4 top tens and a victory in 8 starts this season. But not to be dismissed is Justin Thomas who won last week and has continued the player of the year like performance from last year. It also goes to show you how well Dustin Johnson is playing to be able to hold on to that world #1 spot.
By the way and for the record, that was the 6th playoff in 8 weeks on the PGA TOUR. Are you not entertained!?
Onto this week, the Valspar Championship which has an awesome buzz around it this year. Stuck between the WGC Championship and the AP Invitational next week, this tournament has struggled in the past. But for us, it’s the perfect primer as we start to tee it up and get pumped about the golf season. The Copperhead course is always demanding and requires some cheeky iron play. The last three holes (affectionately known as the Snake Pit) are among the hardest on the PGA TOUR so it will be a fun one to watch.
Like I mentioned, this year the field is a little more stacked than in the past. Tiger is making another start and I gotta say… minus the showing at Riviera he has been hanging with the world best. The t-12 finish at the Honda Classic was really impressive and I will admit I’m starting to believe in him a little more. With another strong finish this week it may be safe to say he’s back. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
