The first World Golf Championship of the year (and second of the season) is here which mean the elite of the elite are heading down to Mexico. If you didn’t know, there are 4 WGC events each year and each rank right below the majors in prize money. This week’s purse amount is 9.75 million dollars and a victory can vault a player to the top of the world golf rankings.
The field (which can be seen here) consists of:
- Top 30 PGA Tour FedEx Cup list (also top 10 from one week prior to event)
- Top 20 European Tour (also top 10 from two weeks prior to event)
- Top 2 each from Asian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia, and Sunshine Tour
And because of the limited field there is no 36-hole cut.
With Rory and Jason Day not in the field this year, defending champ Dustin Johnson will be trying to repeat. Also hungry for a win is Phil Mickelson who has 4 top tens in 7 starts this season.
Although the host course (Club de Golf Chapultepe) is tight, you will see some of the big hitters try to cut corners in the high elevation. Most greens have some pretty severe slopes so execution is huge this week. Below is a little better look at the course:
With all of that being said check out our picks below. Just as a reminder, we take a favorite and a dark horse each week. Comment below with your picks and follow us on Twitter for some more hot takes this weekend.
