Golf Starz Take on the 2018 Genesis Open

Well the PGA has a short trip to wrap up the “West Coast Swing” as they head just over 300 miles south of Pebble Beach to Riviera Country Club. If we ever make it out west for some golf you can expect a lot of content from those two courses!

To recap… Yes, Dustin Johnson was the favorite to win last week at Pebble but we saw plenty of other ‘not so regular’ names coming down the stretch. Guys like Steve Stricker (until the last round) and the eventual winner Ted Potter Jr., who just kept grinding it out! We even heard Peter Kostas say during the broadcast that there are few iconic events like Pebble Beach that are fun to watch because we see so many different styles of golf competing on Sunday afternoon. Which is rare these days! You don’t necessarily have to be ‘Dustin Johnson long’ to have a chance to win. As we saw, if you can stay in the short stuff and keep the flat stick rolling then you can put yourself in contention.. and this week at the Genesis Open is no different.

Onto this week… unless you’re new to golf then chances are you know or have heard about Riviera Country Club. It has been the host of many majors throughout it’s 92 years and has been the host of this event 54 times. And we’ve seen some of golfs all time greats win here. It is tight in some areas and has plenty of beautiful bunkering and ravines that definitely come into play for hitters of all lengths. Below is a video of this classic gem. Or you can click here for a detailed, hole-by-hole look.

Now onto the field… first thing is first: tournament host Tiger Woods is the headliner. Let’s get that out of the way. We know this place is special to him as he played his very first PGA Tour event on a sponsor’s exemption as an amateur in 1992. He had a descent return to golf at the Wold Hero Challenge at the end of 2017 and showed promising signs at Torrey Pines a couple weeks ago. It will be interesting to see how he does this week.

But beyond that, the field is stacked as everyone is chasing down the $7.2 million purse. Last years winner, DJ, is obviously a favorite again this week. Other top players like Haas, Bubba and Phil are trying to win again at Riviera while guys like JT, Spieth and Kuchar are trying to write their names in this courses rich history. It is sure to be a fun one to watch – you can see the tee sheet here.

Obviously another Tiger start (especially with his pairings) has the golf world buzzing again… So how do you think he will preform? What are your predictions? Do you even care anymore?

Honestly as much as we love Tiger and want to see him win again, we’re done talking about it for now. So, on to our picks this week. As always, we encourage you to get involved in the comments and let us know your thoughts and/or picks.
