Alright guys, I am not going to lie. I have struggled to write this review. The piece I have been struggling with most is how to put my thoughts on paper in a coherent way. So, bear with me on this one.
I feel like there are two types of golfers in this world, guys who are happy with their clubs, and no matter what comes along there is no way in hell anything is being replaced in their bag, or you are like me. I am always messing with my clubs. I love to try something new, there isn’t anything on the market that I am not willing to try. So, if you are like me and you tinker with your clubs, I am sure you have been burnt by gimmicky products.
Recently, we came across Ice Cube Putters on social media and right away I was interested in giving it a try. According to Ice Cube Putters, the putter is made of “bullet proof crystal clear acrylic head. The head of the Ice Cube mallet putter provides everything you need for a smooth and consistent stroke.” Ice Cube Putter sent us a standard putter with our logo on it to try and do and honest review. Being able to add a logo or name is a pretty cool feature to personalize the putter.
Additionally, Ice Cube sells both a standard and face on model. You can upgrade your grip and all putters come with a pretty dope head cover.
Let’s break this down, into two categories. Appearance vs. performance.
We asked our followers on twitter to describe the Ice Cube Putter. We had answers that ranged from glassy to slick. We even had someone describe the putter as a stripper’s shoe. Right out of the box I was taken back. The putter is not like anything I have ever seen before. It did take me awhile to get used to it, but I am a big believer in everyone finding their own putter. I am not going to lie, I feel like the TaylorMade Spider is a funky looking putter. Look only goes so far, at the end of the day all that matters in a putter is performance.
Ice Cube claims that the clear putter head allows for you to keep focus on aiming during the swing. Like we said we had some reservations right away when we saw the putter. Since literally looks mean nothing when it comes to a putter, we decided to get some numbers in addition to using it out on the course.
Thanks to our buddy, Kyle, over at the Golf Room here in Columbus, we were able to try out and compare the Ice Cube with a number of putters. Now look, we are middle teen handicaps so there is a lot of human error that goes into this, but looking at the number on average the Ice Cube putter had comparable numbers to every other putter we had there. We compared it to a Cure putter, Scotty Cameron, Odyssey, and Wilson.
We used a trackman to get some numbers and when it comes to roll speed. The Ice Cube was almost identical to every other putter we tested and was within a couple decimal points for ball speed.
There are a couple things that stood out to me while testing. The heavy, bigger face of the Ice Cube really provided for a true roll. Additionally, the heavier head kept my hands quiet and the putter face more aligned through the impact zone. So it is one thing to feel that way, but what does the trackman say? My launch direction with the Ice Cube putter was -.5 and my current putter is -.2, so honestly within the margin of error. A perfect launch direction is a 0.
Additionally, the putter is so balanced that it can literally stand on its own. Having this balance allowed for me to feel confident no matter if I was knocking a putt in from a couple feet or from a longer distance. The added balance allowed me to stand over top of putts, again allowing me to strike the ball evenly.
Lastly, we were able to take the Ice Cube out to try out on the course in Orlando. It did take a couple holes to get used to the clear head on the putter. Once I was able to, I did notice I was able to focus more on the white line, allowing me to focus on aiming.
The Ice Cube putter is not going to be the perfect putter for everyone. For some, the look of the putter may be too much to over come. But at the end of the day, the putter performed right along with other name brand putters. One thing I can promise you is if you do put this putter in your bag, you will turn some heads. Don’t let the look of the putter out weight the performance.
