GOLF STARZ TAKE: THE WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN

Last week, we saw Jason Day clinch victory in an atmosphere similar to a high school golf match.  It was almost surreal to watch.  No fans in the grandstands, no one lining the fairways.  Almost silent when he sunk the last putt.  So take last week’s finish and think of the complete opposite.

The week is upon us, the biggest party in golf.  “The Greatest Show on Grass.”   Last week, we saw a spectator basically get crucified for yelling in Tigers back swing (rightfully so) and this week, we will see the field egg the crowd on to make more noise.  Even for the non golf fan, this The Waste Management Phoenix Open is a must watch.  Last year over half a million people attended through out the week.

Everyone knows number 16.  I mean come one, this single hole has a logo.

But hole 11 will undoubtedly challenge the field.  A 472 yard, Par 4 is a long hole, but this hole is far from a “green light special.”  The water on the left side of the fairway means accuracy will win the day.  Take your par here and walk away.

Also, how about the book end holes to number 16.  Hole 15 is a 553 yard, Par five.  Reachable in two if you stay dry.  Hole 17 is a drivable 332 yard, par 4.  Again, accuracy will win this hole and left means you are dropping a ball and trying to scramble to save par.

Check out the whole course here.

As always, not only is the field stacked, but even the pro-am brings out some real talent.  After three straight weeks with a playoff will we see another playoff?  The last two years it took extra golf for Matsuyama to clinch victory.  While we are missing the likes of the Big Cat, JDay, and DJ, there will be no shortage of big name players.  This years field features five of the world’s top ten.  Does Matsuyama have what it takes to be a three time winner like Palmer and Uncle Phil?  Can Rickie finally move from Bridesmaid to Bride?

Odds favor Matsuyama, Spieth, and Rahm.

Here are our picks, you know the drill a favorite and a “long” shot.
