Aloha friends…week two on the Hawaii layover to start the 2018 PGA Tour season. Last week we saw Dustin Johnson both literally and figuratively out drive the competition. What a way to kick off the year!
This week marks the 20th anniversary of the Sony Open in Hawaii. Last year we saw Justin Thomas go dumb low carding a 59. When the tour stops in Hawaii we all win – afternoon viewing on TV back here on the mainland.

This week’s stop takes us to the Waialae Country Club, a Par 70, 7,000 yard course that features some of Oahu. The Waialae Country Club orders wide fairways and Bermuda greens. Similar to last week, shot selection is going to be key to owning this course. Waialae has more water in play than last week. With the weather looking great for the weekend, we should expect to see some low scores. A couple holes I would like to highlight:
Hole 8 (Hairy): I am a huge fan of holes that the drive is the most challenging shot. Hole 8 is known by the locals as “Hairy.” The hole earned it name because even the best players in the field are facing a hairy tee shot. As long as you are clean off the tee, this hole sets up nicely. If not you are in trouble.
Hole 10 (Drive Away): A 351-yard par 4 – need I say more? After last week, Dustin Johnson could use a 3 wood to drive this hole….too bad he isn’t in the field. Expect the field to grip and rip here.
Hole 17 (Mud Hen): A “longer” par three with bunkers and water in play. With the amazing view of the ocean to the left this is a perfect golf hole. Card your 3 here and move on.
The Sony Open offers a full 144 player field. More than four times last week’s field means we will see some “new” faces and for the first time this season, a cut. The field is stacked, even with a couple notable names missing. My overall predication is that on Sunday we will see some guys at the top of the leader board that have not previously or recently been in the race.
