THE 2017 RSM CLASSIC

Golf Starz take on the RSM Classic

-J. Lee

As we move onto week 7 of the 2017-2018 PGA Tour season let’s take a minute to reflect on the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Yes, Rickie Fowler finished runner up and is looking really good as we head into the new year but last week was all about the Auburn alum Patton Kizzire. Kizzire may not be a house hold name yet but he’s been grinding for a while now and deserves a little attention.  He went through the grueling Q-School in 2014, was voted the Web Tour Player of the Year in 2015, and had 2 top-10 finishes during the 2016-17 PGA Tour season. This season he already has two top-10’s and can call himself a winner on the PGA Tour.

And with that win he became fully exempt through the 2019-20 PGA Tour season while also earning 500 FedEx Cup points, a spot in the field at the 2018 Sentry Tournament of Champions, The PLAYERS Championship, Masters Tournament and PGA Championship. He also jumped to 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Oh and one more thing… Kizzire lives on St. Simon Island, the site of the RSM Classic this week. Again, it’s always great to see such a classy, humble and hard working guy accomplish such huge career goals.

Now onto the RSM Classic hosted by Davis Love III. One of the reason’s we love this game so much is because everything the game and it’s players do to give back. This week is no different as RSM and Davis Love III (and his foundation) support both national and community-based programs that focus on children and their families. To date (7 years), The Davis Love Foundation has given more than $7 million to charity.

But don’t get it mistaken, this tournament is also very important for the players as well. This is the last chance for guys to get some crucial FedEx Cup points in 2017.

The RSM Classic has produced first time champs each of the last 3 years. In fact, 22 rookies will make the start this week. But some of the notable players include Davis Love III, Chesson Hadley, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson, Zach Johnson, Kevin Kisner and Ernie Els. You can see the full 72 man field here.

A Tom Fazio redesign, the Sea Island Golf Club (Seaside & Plantation course) is an ocean side links course with big sweeping dunes and plenty of native “gunch”. These 2 courses routinely rank among the top 100 courses in the United States. You can see the full layout of the course here. Although the views are pretty much perfect, players will be dealing with plenty of wind and bunkers this week. And with a purse of $6.2 million the winner will receive the 1st prize payout of $1.08 million.

With that being said… you know how we like to do this. Below are our favorite and long shot picks for this week. As always, we encourage you to get involved in the comments and let us know your thoughts and/or picks for this week.
