Golf Starz take on the OHL Classic at Mayakoba

-J. Lee

The PGA Tour makes its annual trip down to Playa del Carmen, the site of the first PGA Tour event held in Mexico in this century. Since it’s inception in 2007, the OHL Classic at Mayakoba has seen big name guys like Fred Funk, Graeme McDowell and Charley Hoffman win there. In fact, Pat Perez started off his record year last year by winning this event. As we know, he finished 15th in the FedEx Cup standings last season. He has kept the momentum going after his first Presidents Cup appearance by winning early this season at the CIMB Classic thus vaulting him into first place in the young FedEx Cup standings.

Thanks to the PGA Tour’s new-“ish” rule which requires players to add one new event to their schedule each season, we will start to see some of the top guys play in these early season events. The “new” event each season must be one that the player has not played in in the last 4 years. El Camaleón Golf Club, which is just south of Cancún, is a stunning Greg Norman design and wouldn’t be a bad place to hang out for a week in mid-November. My point is, the field is more full this week than it would normally be with guys like Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson and Patrick Reed on the tee sheet.

This is also a very important event for the Web.com Alums. Along with a whopping $7.1 million dollar purse, the winner gets an invitation to the Masters… every tour players dream. The winner also gets:

  • $1,278,000 and
  • 500 FedEx Cup points

The beautiful El Camaleón GC stays true it’s name by bending through the Mayan jungles, limestone canals and Caribbean coastline. There is no shortage of bunkers or water so accuracy is extremely important. You can get a good look at the course hole-by-hole here or by watching this video of the whole resort:

You know how we like to do this. Below are our favorite and long shot picks of the OHL Classic. As always, we encourage you to get involved in the comments and let us know your thoughts and/or picks for this week.
