Golf Starz Take on the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

-L. Daniels

As we say goodbye to #GolfAfterDark and see some more golf back on the main land, we look back at last week.  First off, congrats to Ohio native Ryan Armour for winning down in Mississippi.  #ArmourArmy

Last week in #GolfAfterDark, we saw Justin Rose play consistent throughout the weekend and come from 8 shoot behind to hold off Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, who put up a dumb low score early in the week.  Justin Rose has won every year since 2010 (Counting the 2016 Olympics) – pretty impressive given we are running out of weekends in 2017.

This week the Tour heads out to Sin City for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.  The tournament was founded 34 years ago and has a rich history in Las Vegas.  The tournament has taken on different names throughout the year, and at times was the biggest pot on tour…kind of fits for a tournament in Las Vegas.  Additionally, we have seen many first-time winners (Tiger Woods) hoist the trophies and some big names win here too.

The field is taking on TPC Summerlin, host to the tournament since 2008.  A par 71 – 7,255 yards’ course that is crafted to showcase the natural beauty of Last Vegas will without a doubt challenge the field.  The final four holes offer a little bit of everything.  A water lined par 3, a drivable par 4, and a par 5.  I am excited to see how the field handles these holes. They are set up for a great finish.  TPC Summerlin is a course, that will look great on TV, but I really don’t think the TV coverage will do it total justice.  I am a huge fan of when courses show off the landscape of the region and is looks built into the land.  Check out the Google overview here and a hole by hole description.  We expect to see a lot of birdies on this course, and maybe we will see another ace on 17, like we saw during the playoff in 2010.

Now to the field.  This week, the field is not littered with “big” names.  We won’t see Thomas, Spieth, D. Johnson, Matsuyama, etc. but those guys being absent in the field does not mean we are not in for some great golf.  We will see players like Ryan Moore, Kevin Na, Webb Simpson, and Bubba Watson.  What excites me the most is seeing a lot of the alums in the field.  Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is known for first time PGA Tour winners and as you will see, we have our money on some young guys looking to rack up some victories.  Check out the full field here.
