Golf Starz Take on the 2017 WGC-HSBC Champions
The Tour makes it’s finals stop of their 2017 Asian swing in Shanghai, China this week. But before we get into that let’s just reflect on what a year Justin Thomas had. Last week Justin Thomas beat Marc Leishman on the second playoff hole in South Korea in the CJ Cup to seal his 5th PGA win of 2017. This guy had a year for the record books and we hope to see him roll right into 2018 with full momentum. Enjoy the time off JT!
The final stop of the Asians swing is the first of four World Golf Championships this season. In it’s short lifetime, this tournament has produced an impressive list of winners. We’ve seen Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer and (last year) Hideki Matsuyama win this World Golf Championship. Pat Perez who has won once during this Asian swing (CIMB Classic) and rookie of the year Xander Schauffele are among the limited field at the HSBC Tournament. The point being… if you are taking this event lightly, think again! Get a look at the tee sheet here and see the full field here.
Here are some highlights of last year:
The site for this event, the Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai, is only 13 years old and ranked in the top 100 courses in the world last year. The course is long but pure. There are tree lined fairways and well guarded greens. But if these guys hit the ball where they are supposed to then there is plenty of opportunity to go low. Get a full look at the course here.
- The Winner receives 550 FedEx Cup points
- The Winner also receives $1.66 Million of the $9.75 Million purse
Although this is the WGC – a very critical tournament, the pre-tournament photo shoot is a tradition unlike any other. If you get a minute go back through the recent years and take a look at some of the crazy photo shoots – you won’t be disappointed.
And not to be forgotten… the PGA Tour (those not playing in the WGC) returns to the Sanderson Farms Championship at The Country Club of Jackson. We look forward to seeing some of our recent Web.com Alums like Beau Hossler, Matt Atkins and Tom Lovelady play well. Keep an eye on the leader board while you are watching football this weekend here.
With all that being said… you know the drill. Our picks are below. Comment who you think is going to take home the seasons first WGC.
- Favorite: Hideki Matsuyama
- Long Shot: Peter Uihlein
- Favorite: Brooks Koepka
- Long Shot: Wesley Bryan
