Golf Starz recap and look forward on the CJ Cup this week:
As we move to stop number two on the Asian swing to the PGA tour, let us take a minute to recap last week. We finally saw Justin Thomas come back to earth, Kevin Na hole out from an impressive distance, and the X-man continue to make some moves. Congrats to Pat Perez on the victory – an amazing performance. How can you not love Pat Perez? The dude rocks Jordans and when we followed him at the Memorial Tournament in Columbus during a practice round he was listening to music. When I grow up I want to be like Pat Perez.
This week the PGA tour is making its first ever regular season stop in South Korea. The players will take on Nine Bridges. Did you know that Nine Bridges actually only has eight bridges? Nine Bridges is located on Jeju Island and has been ranked one of the top course in South Korea and in the Top 100 courses worldwide. No one in the field will be intimately familiar with the course, as even the Korean born golfers have not played there much. The par 72, 7,196 yard course is going to be a challenge to the field and fun to watch on TV. The course is designed into the side of a volcano where elevation will play a major factor on each hole. There isn’t a hole on the course where the field will be able to relax. Holes with trees darting into the fairways, bunkers in the middle of the fairway, water playing a factor on a number of holes, and pot bunkers that can stand toe to toe with ones we see at The Open. I could go on and on about this course – one day I hope to play it. Before you turn on the tournament this weekend, check out the course lay from the CJ Cup’s website below and here. There are courses and then there is Nine Bridges.
A 9.25 million dollars purse. You heard that correct, 9.25 million dollars. 9.25 is 10x larger than any other tournament on the circuit according to K.J. Choi. The field is stacked, with both the winner and runner up projected to both make over a million dollars, we will see if you put enough money on the line, will the weekend have the same feel as a major? Early in the golf season, I am excited to see how this tournament shakes up the schedule. With Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Patrick Reed, Daniel Berger, and last week’s winner Pat Perez there are enough big names to attract a crowd. With additions from the Korean PGA Tour looking to make a name for themselves, the field is full of great players. Money, a great course, and a great field…what more could we ask for?
Check out the whole field here.
