Golf Starz Take the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship
Ok…so I will be completely honest, other than catching some LPGA action on Golf Channel or reading about some of the controversy either about the new dress code or having fans call in to report rules infractions, I do not have a lot of knowledge about the LPGA. But look, everyone in life no matter what you are doing, is chasing their dream. We at Golf Starz are chasing our dream, so join us on this journey to go from LPGA novices to experts.
This week’s tournament takes us to Incheon, South Korea for the only LPGA stop in South Korea. The golfers will be taking on the Sky 72 Golf Club’s Ocean Course. This 6,316-yard Par 72 Nicklaus designed course is going to, without a doubt, challenge the field. Like most courses the Golden Bear puts his paws on, shot selection is key. If you are not accurate then you will find yourself in jail very quickly. Water is in play on more holes than not. So again, Jack has designed this course to reward those golfers that will play within their ability. For some holes, you should take your par and get out of there. Unless you are one of the lucky few who have had the opportunity to play this amazing course, check out this hole by hole walk through of the course here and here.
Now on to the field. As we are getting closer to the end of the Race to the CME Globe and Rolex Player of the Year, the field is stacked and every golfer will be fighting for every spot to gain points. This week has 15 of the top 16 golfers in the Rolex Women’s World Rankings. From looking at winners this year, South Korean golfers have honestly been dominating. According to the Golf Channel, South Korean golfers have won 13 of 27 tournaments. One would have to think home turf will play a factor this week.
The field has past winners Carlota Ciganda, Lexi Thompson, and Amy Yang in addition to names we all know Michelle Wie, Danielle Kang, and Shanshan Feng. One pairing I am really excited to see is the world’s top three players teeing it up together in the first round… No. 1 So Yeon Ryu, No. 2 Sung Hyun Park and No. 3 Lexi Thompson. Can you believe that Sung Hyun Park is a rookie?
We are excited to learn more about the field as well as the golfers. You can check out the full field here.
Again, we hope you come on this journey with us. Expect more and more insight and coverage as the weeks go on. As we do with the PGA Tour and Web.com Tour, below is who we are keeping our eye on to win part of this $2 Million-dollar Purse…
For the first couple weeks, we are going to pick two golfers a piece, as always prove you know more than we do and comment who you have your eye on below.
- Sei Young Kim (Little home turf advantage)
- Lexi Thompson
- Danielle Kang (Stevie Williams on the 1’s and 2’s)
- Jessica Korda
If you’re an LPGA fan or follower we encourage you to comment below your picks and or any insight you have into this week.
