WILSON DUO SOFT GOLF BALLS

Product Review – Wilson Staff’s newest line of DUO golf balls.

-L. Daniels

Wilson Staff has been making moves in the Golf industry recently. And we have been looking forward to sharing this post for a while! Today, Wilson Staff is launching their newest line of DUO balls. These are great looking and even better performing golf balls.  Not going to lie, it was hard to have these and not post anything about them until now.  Thank you to our friends over at Wilson Staff for including us in the launch and for sending over some balls from the newest line of DUO balls to try out.

I feel like Wilson has been around since golf was invented. While there was a time not long ago where Wilson was in trouble in the golf industry, they seem to be returning to their roots and again pushing the industry to evolve and improve.  Not too many companies can say they have been around for over 100 years and have seen their clubs in the hands of Major winners since day one.  From Gene Sarazen to Arnold Palmer, John Daly to Payne Stewart, Sam Snead and Sir Nick Faldo played Wilson clubs along with some of our favorite golfers on the tour today – Troy Merritt and Brandan Steele both play Wilsons.  In an industry that is always changing, where companies are always coming and going, one thing seems to remain the same – Wilson Staff has been and is returning to be force in the market.

Now, on to the balls.  We all know Wilson Staff’s DUO line of golf balls.  These affordable golf balls have found their way into my bag on a number of occasions.  With this year’s line, they have taken an industry changing golf ball and improved upon it.  Wilson Staff’s DUO golf balls are “the World’s Lowest-Compression Multi-Layered Golf Ball.”  This two piece low compression golf ball went through some changes and improvements that you will benefit from.  I find myself playing better with a softer golf ball.  There is a myth in the golf world that a lower compression golf ball is designed for a slower swing and that is just not true.  A softer ball will not take distance off your drive.  When I went out to test these bad boys, I played with a number of different balls to compare against the new Wilson Staff Duo to see if I was losing distance and to compare the balls around the green.

  • I lost no distance, either in drives or irons
  • I felt like I had a lot of control of these balls with my short game

Wilson took a great ball and made it better without jacking up the price…a welcomed change from what we have seen in the industry.  Wilson took the industry’s lowest 29-compression golf ball and increased the core size while additionally improving the golf ball cover, adding distance and toughness to the ball.  Additionally, Wilson decreased the dimple depth again adding distance.  Look, we can tell you all the measurements behind each improvement, but that’s not Golf Starz.  We want to tell you how the golf balls performed in the hands of decent to average golfers, much like yourself.  In laymen’s terms, Wilson Staff made improvements to the ball to improve distance and accuracy.  Both things we all need to improve in our game.  We did include some metrics above from Wilson Staff, if you are into that kind of thing.  More distance and better accuracy…what more could you ask for?

Well… Wilson Staff went one step further.  Say what you will, but I tend to buy yellow or colored golf balls.  I have always liked them.  Wilson has added an optix finish to balls which I am huge fan of.  Bubba Watson recently switched it up from a white golf ball and we are seeing some guys who were on the Web.com tour and now in the big show make the switch as well.  Why not add some more color and personality to your game?  Added bonus – as the season shifts in Ohio and we see fairways start to have an added layer of leaves, the bold colors will make your ball easier to find.  With the performance of these balls, coupled with the cool looking finish, you are making a mistake not trying these once they hit the market.

The new DUO soft line will retail around $20 dollars once they are available to the public, which is a real steal.  They will start taking pre-orders in late October and the ball will be in stores in late November.  I know what I will be adding to my Christmas list here soon.

Check our Twitter and Instagram this week for some content of us playing with the new balls and check back soon for our review from a guest contributor on the women’s balls.

Now let’s just hope I don’t lose them all before I can buy them.
