Golf Starz recap and wrap up of the FedEx Cup:
It’s gut check time – the grand finale is here! The top 30 players have moved on to the TOUR Championship to battle for the coveted FedEx Cup trophy. We all know those top five guys are the ones to watch this week (Spieth, Thomas, DJ, Leishman, Rahm). They control their fate from here on out BUT it’s still anyone’s game right now. And let me just say what a masterful wire-to-wire performance from Marc Leishman at the BMW Champs. That guy stepped on the gas and never looked back. He is definitely hot right now.
But we also saw some big names get eliminated including Phil Michelson who missed the TOUR Championship by 1 shot.
Jason “Duff Daddy” Dufner was the last guy to make it in and has been quietly chugging along so it will be interesting to see how he finishes the year. Similarly, rookie Xander Schauffele has been a favorite or long shot pick for me all year long and I’m pretty sure people still have no idea who he is!
Obviously we made our FedEx Cup picks at the beginning of the playoffs so we are going to stick with them but the way Tony Finau and Patrick Cantlay (another rookie) finished at the BMW gives them a ton of confidence and momentum going into this week and would be our “dark horses.” By the way the official FedEx Cup standings can be found here.
On to the TOUR Championship. Since 2005 East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta has been the event’s permanent home. East Lake is extremely historic – it was Bobby Jones’ home course just for a reference. To see other famous East Lake members click here. And to see a gallery of the rich history at East Lake click here. But more recently you may remember the ridiculous shot out of the water on 17 (now 8) in 2011 from Bill Haas. He went on to win the FedEx Cup that year because of that shot.
But the club is not only historic… it’s philanthropic as well. Proceeds from operations support the East Lake Foundation, which has helped transform one of the nation’s worst public housing projects into a thriving community (#playingwithapurpose).
In 1994 Rees Jones restored Donald Ross’s original golf course layout – even the clubhouse was brought back to its 1926 design and condition. To see more of the course click here as our friend and voice of the PGA John Swantek previews all 18 holes. You can see the tee sheet here and if you need to get more hyped to watch the best of the best then here you go:
You guys know how we normally do this. But because this is the culminating event and there are no favorite or long shots we will just remind you who our FedEx Cup picks were. As always, we encourage you to comment below and let us know who you like!
- FedEx Cup: Justin Thomas
- FedEx Cup: Rickie Fowler
- FedEx Cup: Jordan Spieth
Lastly, we would just like to thank all of our readers! It has been a fun FedEx Cup to watch and write about. If you participated in the giveaways courtesy of @drinkBODYARMOR then we appreciate ya (we will be doing plenty more of those).
