Golf Starz take on the oldest major of them all…The Open:
There is something about waking up on a Monday the week of a Major. To me, it’s similar to waking up on Christmas morning as a child. Not knowing what kind of golf you will see; will you see someone you may have been expecting to win pull away early; or a young gun surging to the top of the leader board. Will we see someone go wire to wire or will we see a classic shoot out? I don’t know, but I can tell you right now all of us here at Golf Starz are excited.
A little bit about the field:
In my opinion, this is one of the more open fields we have seen in a long time. A total field of 156 golfers. It easy to say someone like Dustin Johnson or Jason Day should win, but when it comes to links golf it really opens the field up. Additionally, we are in a little bit of a transition period in golf. Growing up, if Tiger was in the field that week, no doubt he was the odds on favorite and generally he won. Now we have so many young guys on the up and guys we have been watching for years not willing to give up the top spot. Picks below…

A little bit about the course:
Growing up in the United States, we were not exposed to links style golf often. Watching The Open growing up exposed us to a different style of golf. We have seen the Royal Birkdale serve as the host for the Open, second most to St. Andrews. This course has been one that has offered us so many memorable moments. Check out this video capturing the top ten moments at Royal Birkdale.
The Royal Birkdale does not disappoint when it comes to links style golf. A par 70 course with a total yardage of 7,156 and a layout that causes different wind direction changes on each hole, this course will challenge every player in the field in one way, shape or form.
Before the tourney gets started, check out the course lay out here. I am sure like us many of you will be watching from home. For those who are lucky enough to go, please feel free to send us some footage to our Instagram (@golf_starz) or email us at email@example.com. We would love to feature some of our follower’s videos and pictures throughout the week.
Golf Starz take on who will be lifting the Claret Jug on Sunday:
Now that the players are arriving and the field is rounded out, we at Golf Starz want to let you know who we will be watching. This is the first time we have done this, so here is typically how we look at it. We all take one “favorite” and one “long shot.” Really anyone can define what those mean but we think it’s pretty easy to see.
- Favorite: Rickie Fowler
- Long Shot: Phil Mickelson (at 40-1 odds – I would consider him a long shot)
- Favorite: Justin Thomas
- Long Shot: J.B. Holmes
- Favorite: Billy Horschel
- Long Shot: Wesley Bryan
Let us know your favorite and long shot below. We look forward to witnessing more memorable moments at Royal Birkdale along with all of you. Thanks for reading.
